Mooniland is not a factory, or a studio, or even really a brand. It is one person, a pot of tea, a window, and a quantity of very patient thread.

It begins as plain cotton

Every creature starts the same way: plain cotton fabric and thread. Each piece is hand-dyed to catch the colours of the forest — mushroom browns, mossy greens, soft greys — so no two ever come out exactly alike. (There is a longer look at this in The Story of Hand-Dyeing.)

Then it is embroidered, slowly

Faces, spots, and tiny details are hand-embroidered, one stitch at a time. Some pieces get a thin wire inside so their ears or stems can be gently posed; others get small beads, or yarn made to look like grass.

How long does one creature take?

A small brooch takes a few hours across dyeing, drying, embroidery, and finishing; a more detailed art-doll pendant can take the better part of a day. Pieces are made in small batches — usually just a handful of each — and many are made to order, which is why each one takes time and why each one is genuinely one of a kind.

Sewn a little wrong, on purpose
